PMTs are distributed on the inside surface of the spherical vessel, pointing inwards.    The PMTs are grouped in arrays of 16 each, resulting from the central projection of the 30 diamond shaped facets of a rhombic triacontahedron (polyhedron) onto the inside surface of the vessel.   30 calibration LED's are installed, one at the center of each PMT array.  The LED's are attached to posts which support matching sub-facets of the internal acrylic sphere.  The acrylic sphere separates the PMT's from the balloon, acting as a radon barrier within the buffer oil volume.

  • The principal partner in the KamLAND international collaboration is Tohoku University, located in Sendai,  Japan, approximately 306_km (190_mi) north of Tokyo.
  • The KamLAND installation site is in Kamioka, Japan, approximately 236_km (147_mi) west of Tokyo.
  • The KamLAND collaboration meeting of September 17-19, 1999 was held at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, in Honolulu, near Waikiki beach, on the island of Oahu (sigh).
